Trabzon Turkish Dagger

Description

A nice example of an antique dagger from the North Black Sea coast of Turkey, around the Trabzon area. The hilt carved in typical fashion from black horn and bone with inserted bands of brass. The pommel with the distinctive grip cut-out shape to the lower side, and split pommel also found on the yataghan sword. The blade of good steel fullered at intervals along the back edge. One brass bolster to one side the other lacking. The sheath  of leather with the regional black and green leather binding to the upper section which is also often found on the mounts of the ‘black sea yataghan’. Section of belt and buckle still remaining. An old thimble has been used for the protective chape, an interesting use of ad-hoc use of something at hand for a repair. Dating to the 19th century.  middle east
