Mahdist Sword with croc skin scabbard dated 1881
Description
An interesting Kaskara type sword from the Sudan. Typically this type of sword can be associated with crocodile or reptile skin as in this instance, with the scabbard and handle grip all made from reptile hide. Often associated with the Mahdist Rebellion in Sudan in 1881, this sword bears that association out, as the blade as well as having etched decorative panels of a snake and islamic cartouches with arabic writing bears the date 1881, the very start date of that occasion. The crossguard appears to be made from brass, the two side mounted en-suite daggers are crudely made with wooden handles and simple stamped decoration to their steel blades. 19th century good condition
