Fine Silver Ottoman Yataghan from Greece

Description

A very nice quality antique Yataghan sword from Ottoman Greece, probably Epirus region. The sheath chiselled out of silver for its entirety, the end with a monsters head, scrolling panels and borders of shells and flowers, the upper sections chiselled with trophies of arms and one side with a large galleon suggesting a maritime connection. The upper sheath section with very fine woven silver bands and ribbing, the upper edge with a small silver loop. The yatagan sword itself with a silver hilt comprised of panels of silver finely engraved with decoration and niello, the upper edge (spine) of the blade applied with silver and with a long inscription in arabic calligraphy inlaid with niello. The hilt has some old repair and some minor separation of the edges caused by age but is sound and solid.  The steel blade in good condition, with inward leaning curvature, engraved panels to both sides, one with a long arabic inscription within a cartouche, and also a deeply stamped makers mark, the other side with what appears to be a spouted pot with floral garlands from the top. Circa 1800.  middle east
