Fine Georgian or Russian Hunting dagger with goldwork
A fine Russian or Georgian Hunting shortsword or Hanger. The hilt, quilons, and scabbard mounts decorated thoroughly with gold stylised plant ornament designs. The large blade with goldwork at the forte and of high quality steel with sharpened front and half back edge, displaying an etched bulat type pattern to the surface. The scabbard covered with black shagreen hide. A very similar example is held at the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg in the Caucasian Arms department Inventory No. 3389 ( pictured here), dated to between 1830-1840, and suggested as the work of a Tiflis master. The goldwork and style of the example offered here is likely to be from the same maker or workshop. First half of 19th century, 55 cms long overall.
