Antique Bedja Sudanese War Shield with bullet holes

Description

A good example of a Sudanese war shield. Probably made from elephant hide, very thick and heavy. The conical boss with a vertcal raised ridge, the edges with two circular cut-outs, supposedly used as spears rests. Interestingly this shield appears to have bullet holes from strafing, presumably machine gun, as confirmed by examination by a ballistics expert. Circa 1900.
