Antique Armour- English or European Iron Gorget circa 1580.
A nice piece of English or British plate armour – gorget. This section of armour was worn to protect the junction of the breastplate and the helmet, in this case it is made up of a large front and back plate which fit together and two further lames which would have been attached inside the main sections. The leather straps have perished so the plates are no longer connected but this is a simple restoration proceedure. The steel plate is fairly thin and flexible so in this instance the gorget would have been worn more decoratively than for actual battle use. The steel is in good condition and would clean up very well if the present dark black patination is not favoured. This appears to be a genuine period piece of armour circa 1580 european
