19th century Zulu spear ‘Assegai’

Description

A good 19th century Zulu spear known generally as aulu name for this type of spear is an Isijula.The leaf shaped blade with a ling and heavy steel ‘neck’ or shaft, designed to provide a perfect balance for the spear when thrown. The collar tightly bound with flat grass stem, lond wooden shaft with a lovely rich age patina throughout. Overall length of 54 inches, the blade 7 inches, the blade and steel shank together measuring 14 inches. Collected during WWII by a British Serviceman in South Africa.  african
