Sudanese Mahdist Axe. A rare and fascinating war axe and pick from Mahdist Sudan, dating to the second half of the 19th century. This weapon follows in the tradition of islamic weapons of similar from used throughout the middle east. The large crescentic blade is decorated on both sides with silver designs and panels of calligraphy. Likewise the top spike, and the thick robust curved pick. The haft is covered with yellow crocodile skin, something frequently found on mahdist weapons from the 1880’s onwards. Extremely good condition!
