Indian mail helmet ‘khula zirah’ . A good early Indian head protection made entirely from links of small rivetted steel mail. finely made and in good condition, this helmet would have probably been worn over a padded underlayer, and in conjunction with similar rivetted body armour, a shirt or plates of steel. The crown of the helmet is fitted with a circular steel plate on which stands a steel tube for inserting a plume or similar decorative or functional feature. The face section of the mail is cut into a V section to allow some space for facial features and presumably could have been clipped up when required to allow the face to be free. Very good condition, in uncleaned original condition. Dating probably to the 18th century or earlier. * please note overall photos have been taken with a mount under the helmet to show the shape when on the head, this is for the photos and not included.
