A rare and unusual Indian armour cuirass from Hyderabad, in the Deccan region of South India. Shaped anatomically to resemble a mans physique, the main sections are made from wootz damascus steel. The neck and armholes are edged with rounded rims, and borders of arabesques. Formed from two halves, the sections are joined together at shoulder and side with long steel pins which slide through joining lugs at these points. A simple raised collar to the rear of the neck. The inner surfaces blackened, probably originally there would have been a padded wool and fabric lining for comfort. A number of these cuirasses have survived and some inscribed with the name of the Nizam of Hyderabad, and dated to the 18th century. It is likely these were acquired and used for some of his troops at the time, although it does seem entirely possible that the cuirass is older and maybe 17th century. Cuirass body armour of this form can be found in various regions, it is possible this is a direct imitation of the cuirasses used by Europeans during this period, and a reflection of the fashion for European items, swords etc among some indian nobility. Good overall condition, age wear and minor losses to areas. A magnificent and rare display piece
