Beautiful Vietnamese Guom sword with Elephant molar Grip and silver mounts

Description

A very beautiful Vietnamese sword ‘Guom’. Mounted with silver throughout with a repeating theme of squirrels and butterflies amongst leaves and berries in a European style. This theme is continued with the wonderful quality mother of pearl shell inlays to the wooden panels of the scabbard. The hilt mounted with silver, large handguard, the pommel finely chiselled as a dragon or monsters head, and the grip formed from a single chunk of elephant molar tooth with its unique texture and appearance. The blade on this sword is most curious, of brass and presumably of ceremonialpurpose despite what appear to be a few nicks along the edge. A wonderfully decorative sword of the late Nguyen Dynasty circa 1880.  far east
