Asian Turkmen Sword with Damascus steel blade

 A scarce sword, antique and collectible. From the Asian regions of what is now Uzbekistan and Khazakstan, these swords show many similarities to the shaskha or shasqua sabres of the Caucasian and Russian peoples, no guard, sharply curved blade, split pommel, and deeply seated sword when in the scabbard. This example has a stunning quality wootz steel blade, sharply curved and with some engraved geometric designs to the forte, scarf join mark to the forte. The steel hilt mounts are also fine crystalline wootz or ‘damascus’ steel. The hilt grips of bone or ivory. The scabbard covered with leather and with steel mounts and hanging rings, the back of the scabbard mouth has a cut to enable the deep curve of the blade to be sheathed and withdrawn easily/ A lovely and rare sword dating to the 19th century.
