Moro sword ‘Kampilan’ from the Southern Philippines/Mindanao or North Borneo. Most unusual wooden hilt form with a lifelike depiction of a crocodiles head with open jaws. The lower jaw with inlet groove/channel perhaps to retain a hair crest. The hilt with bound cord, and a rectangular wooden crossguard. The steel blade with single edge and shaped end, the whole sword complete with its simple wooden scabbard with open slit along one edge to allow fast sword removal. 19th century, southern asia
