An attractive Ottoman shamshir sword probably from Algeria or North Africa. The blade deeply curved and made from fine watered wootz steel with a strongly visible pattern. The hilt with grips of good quality horn, engraved brass mounts and crossguard. The scabbard with large silver mounts both locket and chape deeply chiselled with repousse scrollwork decoration, the central hanging band applied with four red stones possibly coral. Good overall condition, wear and some loss to central leather sheath section, the sword probably an old association with the scabbard. dating to the 19th century. Middle eastern
