Fine Vietnamese Lacquered Shield

 A scarce shield from the hill-tribes of Jarai, Vietnam. The circular dished shape constructed of wood and cane, the front and back applied with designs cut from strips of tin. The front features a large sunburst design  with rays emanating towards the rim, around which are small star or flower motifs. The convex reverse with cane/wood grips. The front of the shield is dished.A very rare piece, these shields were used for warfare and also for ceremonial functions. Some age wear, slight losses to the black lacquer around the rim, and some lifting of the rear handle and tin applique. Approximately 18.5 inches diameter. Early 20th century. Southern Asia
