A fine war-club from the Northern Amazon ‘makana’. Carved to the top with designs of exceptional intricacy. . Each side decorated with a beautifully carved snake and frog/toad. It is unusual to find figurative carving on makanas, the snake and frog ‘Kwekwe’ ‘Wanadi finyamohodo’ carrying strong totemic resonance in many tribes, such as the WaiWai and Ye’kuana. Retaining a lovely glossy patina, smoothed age wear to the carvings, old chips to upper and lower corners, and minor chips elsewhere. Dimensions 47 x 9 x 3 cms. Northern Brazil/Guiana/Venezuela. 19th century or earlier.
