Taiwanese knife Atayul tribe

Description

A scarce large knife from Taiwan, probably the Atayul or Bunan tribe. The very thick and strong steel blade is typical of the taiwanese knives, the hilt is made of wood finely wrapped with goiled brass wire. The sheath of wood, subtley carved and shaped is open faced to one side with a decorative arrangement of wire staples forming the front. Good condition circa late 19th century.  far east
