Massive Heavy! bladed Indian Tulwar sword with gilt hilt
A very nice Indian sword – Tulwar. The size and presence of this sword cannot be conveyed by images unfortunately, the size and weight of the blade means that it is very difficult to hold the sword with one hand. It’s rare to find a sword of this calibre and from handling it is fairly clear it would make light work of nearly all but the heaviest armour. It is clear that the blade is pattern welded damascus, unusual wide fuller to the blade centre and an early style blade tip with the yelman at the end of a pseudo sharpened black edge. The hilt of steel heavily silvered and retaining good traces of a thick gold layer in places. The scale and weight of this sword, and the style of the gilt-silver hilt suggests that this is an earlier piece and we would date it to the late 17th or early 18th century. indo persian, shamshir kilij
