Two Moro silver mounted spears from the Philippines with Damascus or twistcore steel blades
An interesting couple of eastern ‘budiak’ Spears, probably Moro, both mounted with silver collars and fine steel blades with a pattern-welded ‘damascus’ or ‘twistcore’ section to the centre. The first with long dark wooden shaft, the end with a squared widened foot, the silver collar chiselled finely with bands of floral decoration, the thick steel blade with straight edges and a twistcore centre and thickened base. The second with shorter wooden shaft, the upper section with ribbed carving, the collar unusually chiselled with decoration seemingly of Chinese figures and scenarios, the upper band with a short inscription in chinese script. The long blade with waved edges, much thickened base, and a centre section with a large and distinct twistcore or pattern-welded damascus region. The longer spear 79 inches, the shorter 73 inches approximately. Circa 1880. Southern philippines, indonesian, malaysian, southern asia, sulu, mindanao
