Rare Dusun Dayak shield from Borneo Woven Cane
Description
A rare Dusun Dayak circular cane shield from Borneo. These shields rarely survive, and there is minimal literature about them, but round shields used by this and surrounding tribes are recorded from the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is a similarity between the weaving of this shield and those found in Aceh, and it is likely there was some crossover of tradition, however this is larger, and the woven arm rings are unique to this form. Surviving in very good condition, a very similar shield lacking one ring is in the smithsonian collection collected in Borneo in 1906.
