Indian Zaghnal war Axe with original cover or sheath
Description
An original rare Indian Zaghnal or ‘crowbeak’ axe. This sharp thick point was used like a warhammer pr pick to pierce through armour and mail. This example has a greatly thickened blade, with traces of gold decoration to the bottom part, and other areas of the head. The shaft is of iron, at the bottom a screw-in knife blade exists as a concealed weapon. This weapon is in fair condition, the shaft and non blade part of the head have a dark patinated surface. Unusually this zaghnal retains its original sheath blade cover of iron with traces of silver covering, internally cushioned with fabric padding. This axe cover is an extremely rare survival. 19th century.
