Description

A nice example of the Somalian Gashan shield, a small hard buckler made from hippo skin rawhide. Cleverly stretched and shaped with the use of moulds and pins, cut and stamped to create an intricately patterned front of immense strength. Gently conical central boss and raised rim, the reverse with a hard looped handle grip. 12 inches diameter. Circa 1900, Somalia/Eritrea
