Fine Abyssinian or Ethiopian Silver Mounted Shield Gashan

Fine Abyssinian or Ethiopian Silver Mounted Shield Gashan

An attractive Ethiopian shield Gashan of hide covered with rich blue velvet and mounted with finely embossed silver plaques probably originally gilt. Large central boss with four side bosses and circular silver bands with radiating plaques in between. These deeply dished circular shields were used decoratively at the Abyssinian Imperial court as status symbols, and were also practical shields with a hard leather/hide structure. The reverse of the shield features a large rounded arm loop, the red leather is worn but retains details of its intricate applied decoration. Dating to the late 19th/early 20th century.  africa,
