Antique Omani Matchlock Musket

Antique Omani Matchlock Musket

A scarce early matchlock musket from Oman/Southern Arabia. This form of musket was typically simply stocked, but generally as with this example fitted with an extremely high quality barrel. The smoothbore barrel is strikingly chiselled with fine ribbing, centre section of cylindrical cross-section. They are invariably of damascus twist steel, which this one is most likely. The breech forte deeply stamped with makers stamp. This gun is a fantastic example retaining it's hide breech covering, its original match consisting of twisted fibrecord bound with cotton, also two large brass tubular fittings with a flattened decorated plate to the end, probably to hold lighted splints. A rare early Arab musket, 60 inches approximately. circa 1700 Oman/Southern Arabia. Middle East
